How do I create a hanging indent for a citation in my reference or works cited page in Word?

Answer

A hanging indent is required for all citations on your MLA works cited page and APA reference page. A hanging indent is an indent that indents all of the text except for the first line.  See the examples below:

Using the "Paragraph Options."

Step 1: Place the text cursor at the beginning of the first line of the citation.

Step 2: Look under the "Paragraph" section.

Step 3: Under the "Paragraph" section, click on the "Special Indent" drop-down menu.

Step 4: Under the "Special Indent" drop-down menu select "Hanging."

Step 5: The hanging indent has been created.

Using the Short-Key (CTRL + T)

Note: This method can only be used on the Word application and not on the web version using your internet browser.

Step 1: Place the text cursor at the beginning of the line of text that you want to indent. This line of text is where the hanging indent will start.

Step 2: Press CTRL + T on your keyboard.

Step 3: The hanging indent has now been created.
