What are interlibrary loans?

Answer

If there is an article or book that isn't available through the Heritage library, we can request a digital copy (articles) or loan (books) from another library in Canada. These loans or copies are referred to as Interlibrary Loans (ILLs).

Interlibrary loans cost the Heritage library a minimum of $15.00 per loan so we encourage our users to explore our databases and resources first before requesting an interlibrary loan. However, if you need an article or book that isn't in our collection, we will request it for you. The library also covers the cost of getting the interlibrary loan for you.

Did you know?

1. Sometimes a book that isn't available in our library can be purchased for our permanent collection in print or digital format! If you think the book you're requesting for an interlibrary loan would make a good addition to the library's permanent collection, you can let us know by completing the Suggest a Purchase form.

2. We have a borrowing agreement with Carleton University, the University of Ottawa, and Cégep de l'Outaouais. This means that you can borrow print books directly from these institutions with a completed form. Please visit the library to have the form completed and signed by the librarian.

Important Note

While the library covers all associated costs of getting you a digital or physical copy of your requested resource, you are responsible for returning physical copies to the library by the due date or fines will accrue at the cost of $2/day. Digital copies do not need to be returned, but should not be shared with others.
